FAC students engage in policy debates at mock parliament

Department of Political Science, Fazl Ali College organised its second Political Science Association Mock Parliament on March 31.

Mokokchung, March 31 (MExN): The Department of Political Science, Fazl Ali College (FAC) organised its second Political Science Association  Mock Parliament on March 31 under the theme ‘democracy in action through youth debating the future of the nation.’

The programme aimed to provide a platform for youth engagement in debate and policy discussions, bringing democracy alive while nurturing awareness, leadership, and active citizenship, and shaping thoughtful perspectives on the nation's future.

The mock parliament session witnessed participation from Political Science students debating on issues including the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), Maulana Azad National Fellowship, Women and Child Development and Uniform Civil Code, with each section presenting dialogue, accountability and participation.

Lanulemba Longchar, alumnus of the college and President of Ao Kaketshir Mungdang, was the special invitee. Reflecting on the lack of opportunities a decade ago, he noted the difference in privileges that the present generation of students is exposed to and encouraged young people to seize every opportunity to realise their full potential.

Longchar called upon the young minds to step into the role of lawmakers and participate in change, conveying the ability to debate, deliberate, and discuss. “A nation does not rise in silence; it rises only when young people raise their voices, voices willing to speak and lead with a purpose,” he said. He also reiterated that leadership is not about winning debates and arguments but in providing solutions that make a difference.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Dr Lipokrenla Jamir, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science, and an overview of the session was presented by Dr E Benrithung Patton, Associate Professor.

Representatives from All India Radio Mokokchung and Mokokchung College of Teacher Education along with faculty and students from Queen Mary Higher Secondary School and Soul House Academy, attended the programme alongside the faculty and students of FAC.
