The Family Court in Dimapur has disposed of 232 cases while 250 remain pending, whereas the Family Court in Kohima has disposed of 32 cases with 13 pending, according to the Annual Administrative Report 2025-26 of the Department of Law & Justice, Nagaland, tabled in the recently concluded 8th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

Nagaland currently has two family courts established in Kohima and Dimapur.

The Family Courts Act, 1984 provides for the establishment of Family Courts by the State Government in consultation with the High Courts to promote conciliation and secure speedy settlement of disputes relating to marriage and family affairs, the report stated.

Under Section 3(1) of the Family Courts Act, it is mandatory for the State Government to set up a Family Court for every area in the State comprising a city or a town with a population exceeding one million.

In other areas of the State, Family Courts may be set up if the State Government deems it necessary.

As per the report, the main objectives for setting up Family Courts are to create a specialised court to deal with family matters exclusively through instituting a mechanism for conciliation of disputes relating to family expeditiously, to provide an inexpensive remedy, and to ensure flexibility and an informal atmosphere in the conduct of proceedings.

At present, there are three Counsellors attached to Family Courts for assisting the Family Court in settling the disputes between families, it added.
