An awareness and training programme on aromatic plants was held at the DC Conference Hall, Wokha, on September 29. Quality planting materials were also distributed to participating farmers.
The programme was organised by ICAR-KVK Wokha in collaboration with CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, under the CSIR Aroma Mission 4.0.
Speaking as the special guest, EAC Wokha Sangmou Khiamniungan stressed that the success of the initiative should go beyond the distribution of seeds and saplings, stating that its real impact would be reflected in farmers’ ability to successfully cultivate the plants and generate sustainable income.
He pointed to the growing interest in health-oriented products, including green tea, as a potential avenue for farmers to explore entrepreneurship. He encouraged the participants to begin on a small scale, gradually expand their activities and establish proper market linkages.
Khiamniungan further assured that farmers could approach the concerned departments and the government for assistance whenever required.
Technical Consultant, CSIR-NEIST, Dr Rahman Amasari, conducted the technical session, providing guidance on sowing and planting techniques, land requirements, harvesting practices, medicinal properties and commercial marketing of aromatic plants.
The session also covered various value-added products and by-products that could be developed from chamomile and lemongrass. Dr Amasari highlighted the objectives of CSIR Aroma Mission 4.0, particularly its focus on promoting scientific cultivation practices and market-oriented approaches to support farmers.
The programme concluded with the distribution of saplings and seeds to the participating farmers.
