Mokokchung, March 13 (MExN): An awareness programme on e-waste management was organised by Fazl Ali College as part of its week-long e-waste collection drive conducted from March 9 to 12.

The initiative was held in collaboration with E-Circle and sponsored by Earth Alliance, with the objective of raising awareness about the environmental and health impacts of electronic waste and encouraging responsible disposal and recycling practices.

The session was moderated by Chubamenla Chang, assistant professor, who briefly introduced the background of the e-waste collection drive and highlighted the growing need for responsible waste management in an increasingly technology-driven society.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr I Wati Imchen, principal of the college, stressed the importance of environmental awareness and proper handling of electronic waste. He said meaningful environmental progress requires vision and collective effort, and shared his goal of developing the college into an eco-friendly campus through effective utilisation of resources and responsible environmental practices.

The resource person for the programme, Bendangwala Walling, co-founder of E-Circle, spoke on the rising presence of electronic waste due to rapid technological usage. She explained the principles of responsible e-waste management — reduce, reuse, segregate, recycle and recover — while highlighting the environmental and health hazards associated with improper disposal of electronic devices.

The session also covered various methods for managing end-of-life electronic products, including refurbishing, recycling and treatment through authorised facilities such as Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs).

Referring to the E-Waste Management Rules introduced in 2011, she emphasised the importance of public awareness and cautioned against handing over e-waste to unauthorised agents. She also highlighted the shared responsibility of producers and consumers and stressed the need to move towards a circular economy rather than a linear system of consumption.

Walling further introduced E-Circle, established in 2018 as Nagaland’s first authorised e-waste collection centre, and its recycling partnership with Hulladek Recycling in Kolkata. She encouraged responsible disposal practices with the message, “Sabko Batao, E-Waste Ghatao.”

The programme concluded with an appeal to channel electronic waste through authorised recyclers and to promote responsible disposal practices within the community.
