F&ES stresses importance of fire extinguisher to control fire

Fire & emergency services (F&ES) SP Neilasa Sopfü along with other fire service personnel and media persons at the training programme on April 12 in Kohima.

Kohima | April 12 : The state’s department of fire & emergency services today stressed on the need to equip with the basic knowledge and correct handling of fire extinguisher to control and prevent the outbreak of fire, and also appealed to public to pass correct information to the fire stations. This was signaled to public at the weeklong long programme on demonstration and training on handling of fire extinguisher, which culminated here today at the Kohima Local Ground.
Apparently, this awareness programme proved timely and educative for public in the wake of number of fire incidents reported in the past few weeks in Kohima and other parts of the state. 150 trainees representing various government departments, churches, schools/colleges, hotels, building owners and public from 7 districts joined the programme. Significantly, this programme evoked positive response from trainees where many opted and demanded for fire extinguisher, sensing its importance in controlling the fire.
Fire & emergency services (F&ES) SP Neilasa Sopfü said the objective of demonstration and training programme was to create awareness on the importance and correct use of fire extinguisher, which he said would go a long way in preventing and controlling the fire.
He, however, regretted that the public are yet to realize the importance of fire extinguisher and ignorance on correct usage of handling to defuse the fire. Nevertheless, he was hopeful that the demonstration and training programme would be a wakeup call for many and help control the fire through the use of fire extinguisher.
In the meantime, the SP called upon the public to provide the right information to fire stations during the outbreak of fire. He regretted that on several occasions, out of panic the public fail to give specific information like right direction and exact location, which resulted the fire personnel inability to reach the spot on time or sometime missed it and unable to save the properties.
Another area of hurdle for fire service to reach on time is due to traffic congestion and narrow passage of road, he said.
Sopfü also appealed to public not to obstruct the fire personnels when they pressed into action and also to avoid the practice of snatching pipe from them, which, he said is highly insulting to the profession.
He also appealed to the public to use the professional skill of fire service and give them space to work.
Stating that maximum number of fire is caused mainly due to human error, he maintained that the use of fire extinguisher is the most effective tool to prevent and control the fire.
He assured that the department will render its best service to public with whatever source available with them. Pleased by the response of trainees, SP announced that the department is ready to guide and install the fire extinguisher to any party/public. He also stated that necessary arrangement for fire extinguisher will be done by the department.
In the meantime, the SP requested the public to dial 101 (Toll Free) that the BSNL provided the same for public to access the fire station in times of emergency and help. Earlier, ASI Keleseho highlighted the classification and handling of fire extinguisher followed by demonstration. Brief report of the training was given by SI Zhasalie.
