First NEWEA meet held

Dimapur, February 22 (MExN): The first North East Women Entrepreneurs Association (NEWEA) meet was held today at Circuit House, Dimapur. Renu Phukon, secretary, Pronoti Gohain, president, and Chitra Lekha Saikia executive member, were the representatives from NEWEA Central Committee.
Renu Shukla briefed on NEWEA stating that the association is a patron for growth of entrepreneurship among women in Assam. The association was established on June 14, 1994 at Gauri Sadan, Guwahati under the motto empowerment through entrepreneurship to help and guide the women who want to be independent financially. “We are working to benefit women and would like to help women who are ready to work, to earn something for herself and want to stand on their own feet,” Renu stated. NEWEA has been organizing exhibition from Central Committee every alternate two years and training on various subjects like food processing, fashion designing, jute diversification, banana fiber, water hyacinths etc. NEWEA has branches under the Central Committee at Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar and Tezpur.
“I am proud to see many enterprising women here at the meet,” said Thungdeno Mozhui, deputy director DRDA Nagaland who graced the meet as the chief guest. She spoke to the women entrepreneurs on taking their skills and how to cope with global issues. “Trends are changing and in this modern world, we have come to a stage where it has become everyone’s business, on the business of climate change, “she said. She stated that the Northeast region has become very vulnerable to climate change, affecting from the top to the grass root level.
Sentila T Yanger, from Tribal Weave, Nagaland also spoke on the theme “Creation of social awareness for uplifting women and girl child through seminars, exhibitions and other related activities.” Sentila shared with the women entrepreneurs gathered, that exhibitions must be held which targets products made and sold by women. She termed the meet as a very good opportunity, and also encouraged the women entrepreneurs to not focus only on Northeast but in taking the products outside the region.
“The understanding of participation of women has begun from the new millennium. We have to create awareness of women in our society through developmental programmes by creating seminars and exhibitions,” she stated. Sentila also felt that nowadays women are taking participation in different fields of work and the society and a family will be lifted through these and also added that the decision making role of a women changes when she starts to earn.
