Along with rest of the country, Mizoram on Thursday launched Fit India Movement (FIM) with state deputy chief minister, Tawnluia kicking off the Fit India Run at Lammual or Assam Rifles Ground in Aizawl in the morning.

Interestingly, five months before the nation-wide launch of FIM, Mizoram had already launched its own  ‘Fit Mizoram Movement” on March 22 this year.

Speaking at the launch, Tawnluia said, “Fit India Movement”, launched on the occasion of the National Sports Day, aims to encourage people to take care of their physical and mental health, which is crucial for development of the country. He also said that the movement will be launched first in education institutions across the state and the government will focus on health and fitness and find out talented sports persons through the movement.

Tawnluia then called upon the people of Mizoram and government officials to extend support to the government for the success of the movement.

The event was attended by Sports minister, Robert Romawia Royte, officials and sport persons.

At the event, chief secretary, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo administered a fitness pledge to over 1,750 people.
Royte said that the state government has already launched “Fit Mizoram Movement” five months ago.
The local movement which aims to encourage the people to inculcate physical health and sports activities was more or less similar with the nation-wide movement, he said.

The Sports minister then appealed to the Mizo people to be the "fittest" in the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nation-wide “Fit India Movement” on August 29 at  Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi.

He appealed to every citizen to maintain healthy life and stay fit.

Reports also quoted Modi as saying that technology contributed to a sedentary lifestyle.
“Technology has reduced physical activity. We walk less now and the same technology tells us that we are not walking enough," he was quoted by media as saying.
