‘Food safety is a shared responsibility’

Governments, producers and consumers have to collectively ensure food safety: NVCO

Kohima, June 7 (MExN): Citizens of Nagaland must realise that World Food Safety Day is celebrated to draw the attention and inspire action to help, prevent, detect and manage food borne risks and so contributing to food security, human health, economy prosperity, tourism and sustainable development.

Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) President, Kezhokhoto Savi stated this in his address during the observance of World Food Safety Day with the theme, ‘safe food now for a healthy tomorrow’ in Kohima on June 7.

“Food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers. Everyone has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe and healthy,” Savi asserted and called for the following actions: State government must ensure safe and nutritious food for all; business operators must make sure food is safe; consumers need to learn about safe and healthy food and last but the least; we should all work together for safe food and good health.

Press & Media Cell, NVCO in a press release said that Savi highlighted on implementation of Food Safety & Standard Act 2006; Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FS&SAI); Consumer Protection Act 1986 among others.

He stated that Nagaland is the only state in NE which has the level-2 laboratory which is fully funded by FSSAI and installed at State Public Health Laboratory (SPHL), Para-medical, Kohima. “It is best for Food Business Operators (FBOs) to come forward in bringing their products, food item and samples to get tested in the SPHL before they sells out to the consumers,” he suggested.

Further, Savi also said that Enforcement Wing of the Laboratory has to work harder to keep the Analysis Wing led by Food Analyst busy in analyzing all parameters as the Food Safety and Standard Act.
