Four convicted for murder of Nagaland Police Inspector

Dimapur, April 20 (MExN): Four persons were convicted in connection with the killing of an Inspector of the Nagaland Armed Police and subsequent theft of his vehicle on September 7, 2018. 

Yuireingam R Shimray, Rinthingchon Lungharwoshi, Porhosie Pojar, Anthony Kapfo were all convicted by the Principal District & Sessions Judge Kohima, Y Longkumer on April 4 for their part in the murder of Inspector Neiphretuo Metsieo, according to a press release from Public Prosecutor Kohima, T Marlemba  on Wednesday.

Another person identified as Nyulosie Katiry was convicted under Section 411 of the IPC on his own plea of guilt at the stage of consideration of charges, the release stated. Section 411 of the Indian Penal Code pertains to “Dishonestly receiving stolen property.” 

According to the release, Shimray was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years with fine of Rs 5,000 for offence under Section 304 of the IPC; in default of payment of fine to undergo another 3 months simple imprisonment; and 1 year imprisonment each for offences under Section 411, 465 and 34 of the IPC. Lungharwoshi was sentenced to 3 years 7 months with fine of Rs 3,000 or 3 months simple imprisonment in default of fine.

For offences under Section 414 of the IPC, Pojar was sentenced to 5 months and 10 days and fine of Rs 5,000 or 3 months simple imprisonment in default of fine, while Kapfo received a sentence of 5 months and 10 days and fine of Rs 5,000 or 3 months simple imprisonment in default of fine for offences under Sections 411, 414 and 461 of the IPC.

In the press release, the Public Prosecutor stated that UBSI Viketouzi of North Police Station, Kohima investigated the case and submitted a chargesheet against the accused persons on November 4, 2018. Prosecution examined 32 witnesses to prove the case, the release stated, adding that the Judge, while convicting the accused persons, stated that “the prosecution has proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.”

“The Court further observed that the accused person does not deserve leniency considering the nature and gravity of the offence, as such the provision of the Probation of Offenders Act, 1958 was not extended to the accused persons,” the press release stated.
An Inspector of the 5th Nagaland Armed Police Battalion, Neiphretuo Metseio had gone missing on September 7, 2018 after he left Kohima in the morning to his place of posting at Pfutsero.

On his way to Pfutsero, Metseio reportedly gave a lift to three persons in his private Mahindra Scorpio. One of the three hitchhikers, a Nagaland policeman, got down half way as Metseio continued the journey with the two others.

As Metseio did not contact his family, his wife filed a missing report with the police on September 11. A combined search team consisting of police and community groups found his body at a spot falling between Zapami and Lasumi villages close to Zuketsa town on September 15, 2018.
