A 10-day free cricket coaching clinic for Under-19 boys and girls got underway at the All Weather Cricket Practice Pitch, Public Ground, Wokha, on July 20. The coaching programme is being organised by the Wokha District Cricket Association (WDCA) in collaboration with the Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA) with the aim of identifying and nurturing young cricketing talent in the district.
The clinic is being conducted by Nihal Ahmad, a BCCI A-Level certified coach from the Nagaland Cricket Association, along with Sulanthung E Kithan, a trained S&C coach, BPed, assisting the coaches are senior Wokha cricketers Nzanthung Mozhui, who has represented Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy, and Romokhon, who has represented the district.
Speaking to The Morung Express, Nihal Ahmad said his visit to Wokha was aimed at promoting cricket and helping young players develop their skills.
“My association with Wokha is not new. I first came here in 2009 as the coach for Wokha’s historic Under-14 team. It is good to be back and see how much the game has grown over the years,” he said.
He noted that Wokha has consistently produced talented cricketers, with several boys and girls representing Nagaland at the state level.
“Wokha has a lot of talented youngsters. Looking at the interest, commitment and effort shown by the children during the coaching sessions makes me very happy. As coaches, our responsibility is to ensure that these talents are recognised, nurtured and given the opportunity to shine,” he said.
Describing cricket as a sport that has steadily gained popularity in the district, Ahmad said the increasing participation of young players reflects the growing interest in the game.
Although the ongoing rains have posed challenges to the training sessions, he said the coaches are making every effort to ensure participants receive proper coaching throughout the 10-day programme.
“We are facing weather-related challenges, but we are making sure the children get quality training so that their talents are recognised and developed,” he added.
Ahmad also expressed gratitude to the Nagaland Cricket Association, the Wokha District Cricket Association and WDCA President Chenithung T. Lotha for organising the coaching clinic.
The clinic has drawn enthusiastic participation from young cricketers across the district. Besides providing professional coaching, the WDCA is also providing free lunch to all participants during the training period.
Meanwhile, WDCA President Chenithung T Lotha encouraged parents and guardians to enroll their children in the coaching programme, stating that interested participants can register at the Public Ground, Wokha, at 8:00 am. He said the coaching clinic will continue over the coming days, providing young cricketers with an opportunity to learn from qualified coaches and further develop their skills.
