Gam Shimray joins UN HRC Expert Mechanism on indigenous peoples

Gam Awungshi Shimray from Northeast India has been appointed as a member from Asia of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by the UN Human Rights Council. The appointment was announced by the UN Human Rights Council on its official X handle on March 31.

Shimray has been working on indigenous peoples’ issues since 1993. He became the Convener of the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR), an indigenous movement based in Northeast India, in 1998.

Between 2000 and 2004, he served as an expert member of the Technical and Policy Core Group (TPCG) for the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) under the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. From 1999 to 2005, Shimray held the position of National Coordinator of the All India Coordinating Forum of the Adivasi/Indigenous Peoples in India.

He is the former Secretary General of the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP).
