GBs urged to uphold integrity and customary law in Phek

Phek, May 14 (MExN): The 41st General Session of the Phek District GBs Association was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall in Phek on May 13 with Deputy Commissioner Rhosietho Nguori as the guest speaker.

Addressing the gathering, Nguori spoke on the authority and responsibilities associated with the “Red Coat” worn by Gaon Buras (GBs), saying it symbolises responsibility and authority and should be worn with dignity and respect.

He said GBs play a significant role under customary law and are entrusted with safeguarding the interests of their respective villages and communities.

Highlighting the importance of Article 371(A) of the Constitution, the deputy commissioner said GBs have the authority to settle disputes wherever necessary under customary practices.

Speaking on the occasion, PTC chairman Shevohu Nienu elaborated on the meaning and origin of the term “Gaonbura”, also known as headmen, stating that the word was derived from Assamese in 1878.

He encouraged the village heads to have faith in God and work with integrity and honesty, describing honesty as one of the most valued qualities in leadership.

Nienu also urged the gathering to spread awareness in their native villages about the significance of the day and strive to become responsible citizens.

He further exhorted the GBs to remain selfless and work for the welfare of the people with transparency and utmost sincerity.

The programme was chaired by Phuzuhu Vero, while the invocation was delivered by Rev Dr Vezopa Tetseo, Pastor of PTBC. Welcome address was delivered by Phek District GBs Association president Zadulhu Ringa.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Mukhayi Veswuh and benediction by Niepayi Venuh.
