Kohima, November 1 (MExN): The Global Naga Forum (GNF) has mourned the demise of Gen (Retd) Thinoselie M Keyho, who passed away on October 29, 2026, describing him as a leader whose life was marked by commitment, perseverance and devotion to the Naga national cause.
In a condolence statement, GNF said his death was a loss to the Naga people, noting that his life offered a reminder of leadership rooted in service, sacrifice, courage and fidelity to one's convictions.
The forum stated that although he could have projected himself among the most prominent Naga leaders, he chose a style of leadership that remained true to Naga culture and traditions. It said he did not view leadership as a means of personal recognition but as a responsibility requiring dedication and sacrifice.
Gen Keyho began his active service to the Naga national cause in 1956 as Secretary to the Director of Intelligence of the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN/NNC). He remained committed to the cause through decades of changing challenges and rose to higher positions through his service and leadership.
His contributions included multiple missions to East Pakistan and China, as well as periods of imprisonment in Tihar Jail and Shillong, the statement said. GNF noted that he remained committed to the aspirations of Naga national pioneers despite perceived or actual threats.
In 2016, he was appointed president of the Naga National Council (NNC) and continued to hold the position until his death.
The forum also highlighted his distinction between personal interests and the larger Naga national cause, alongside his public responsibilities, including his role as president of the Angami Public Organization. It described him as a leader who served both his community and the wider Naga community.
GNF observed that although his contributions had rarely received the recognition they deserved, he remained steadfast in upholding his convictions.
The forum said his passing should also prompt reflection among the Naga people on the kind of leadership they need and the principles they wish to pass on to future generations. It added that the aspirations of a people must be grounded in principles worthy of commitment and sacrifice.
Extending condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues and all those who shared his journey of service, GNF prayed that they find strength and comfort in his memory.
