Dimapur, June 26 (MExN): Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar has said that the government is committed to uplift the minority section of the population in the state. Stating this at the Nagaland Muslim students’ felicitation programme held in Dimapur today, Kumar said that the Muslim community is as important as any other. He assured the government’s support to the Muslim Council Dimapur (MCD), the apex Muslim organisation, in its endeavour to promote education within the community. He said that the government is willing to help the meritorious students because the state is aware that Muslims are educationally backward. He urged them not to hesitate to seek assistance.
Presenting the awards to meritorious students in the HSLC and HSSLC examinations, the Governor said he is impressed to see girls outshine boys, and that it is a sign of the community’s progress in the field of education. Pointing out that Muslims are the largest minority group in India, but the most educationally backward, Kumar said that such students can fill the gap. He told students not to merely focus on attaining degrees but keep bigger ambitions like getting into world class vocational institutes like the IIMs and IITs.
He further urged the community to avail facilities like education loans that have been made available by the government for minorities in India. He urged the State government to also reach out to families living below poverty line, so that children from the low income groups get the opportunity to realise their dreams like others. The Governor also stated that he is elated to see the progress of the community in the field of education in Nagaland. “Ten years ago when MCD initiated this programme, I am told there were only 8 meritorious students. Today it has increased to almost 80 and this is a sign of progress,” he remarked. He also commended the works and efforts of MCD in preserving unity, integrity and communal harmony with other communities in the state.

Stating that Muslims have the lowest literacy rate in the country, Alam urged the MCD to carry on their efforts to uplift and encourage the students. He said that the progress of the Muslims in Nagaland is the progress of all Muslims in the country.
