Government takes over 4 private colleges

DIMAPUR, DEC 7 (MExN): The Government of Nagaland has decided to take over Kohima Arts College in Kohima, Zisaji Presidency College in Kiphire District, Peren College in Peren District and Yangli College in Longleng District with effect from February 1, 2006. This was informed by V Sakhrie, Secretary of the Department of I &PR.  

According to the Secretary, though a release notifying the takeover issued to effect, the Cabinet had decided to take over the aforementioned four colleges with the consent of the respective private college managements. In this regard, earlier the Cabinet, with a view to strengthen the Higher Education policy of the State, had decided to have at least one Government College in each district to promote higher education amongst the youths in Nagaland. Accordingly, after appointing an expert committee in the first week of November this year to go through the modalities of the takeover and presented its report to the State Education Committee which ratified the recommendations, the secretary informed.

With the take-over of these private colleges, the Government will transform itself into a key player in all the districts in the matter of promoting higher education to the youths. The revised UGC pay scales will also become applicable to the lecturers of the said colleges. “The take over of these private colleges is being held as a significant step by the Government which is expected to create a competitive environment in all the districts in the matter of Higher education” the release stated.
