DIMAPUR, JUNE 8 (MExN): The Urban Development Department, Municipal Administration Cell, Government of Nagaland has come out with a office memorandum on the subject of levy of taxes by Municipalities. The order has directed that Municipal and Town Councils shall not levy any type of toll or taxes without prior sanction of the Administrative Department of the State government. The office memorandum was signed by Neihu C. Thur, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland. According to the memorandum, Municipal and Town Councils in order to raise revenue for its duties and performing its functions, levy various taxes within the Municipal/Town Council jurisdiction as envisaged under Section 120 of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001. However this is done with the prior sanction of the Administrative Department of the State government. Further all Municipal and Town Councils have been told to submit comprehensive proposals to the State government indicating item-wise toll or tax and the amount or rate of the tax to be imposed within their respective jurisdiction as per Section 120 and 121 of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 on or before 20th July 2012.
