Grass hopper Politics: Will Presidents Rule be imposed in Nagaland?

Kedi Haralu

The political scenario in Nagaland is rather uncertain, for now is the time the true self emerges. For some MLA's and Ministers who were not very happy, since they were not given a good portfolio, they are now spilling the beans, for it was their portfolio on the line if they revolted against the NPF Party Legislators, senior leaders, so they had remained silent spectators. For them I surely understand why they have changed parties or has stepped down, but one thing that does not make any sense is why has some Ministers holding good portfolios resigned? They did enjoy the full term and have made enough to last them the rest of their lives, so, they have simply no reason to resign or jump parties. Those foolish enough who openly came against the leaders were unceremoniously removed and even had them resign from the party. What is most disturbing is the fact that they are still enjoying the DPF, but what about the common public of his constituency. While some constituencies enjoyed due to their elected candidates, some constituencies has suffered a great deal. It is all because of their candidates pride that they could never say "I am wrong" or "let bygones be bygones" that has made the constituencies suffer a great deal. It has happened right under our noses, for some constituencies had built the infrastructure through development funds, thus the public has been silenced, but on the other hand the neighboring constituencies has been neglected and not an inch of development has occurred. The only reason for this, is, foolishness of the Candidate plus a major ailment which is termed as "pride."

Now the public is lost due to the "grasshopper politics" being played, for they have not an iota of ethics and morals. Now the Ministry is so shaky that we can never know when it will collapse. If this happens, the Centre will surely impose Presidents Rule. Delhi had foreseen this, so they had made a politician of the Congress Party as the Governor of Nagaland. The Centre is a master player in this sort of politics, and we Nagas are so naive that we do not understand, nor, do they smell the rat. If PR is imposed, the peace talks will also breakdown, thus a time of bloodshed, just like what had happened in the past. Now, the danger here is that both the Governments i.e, officially and electoraly Government (Nagaland Government) and the Parallel Government, is very shaky, with infighting amongst themselves and also the issue of tribes has taken the front seat. Nagaland, at this juncture is the perfect field for Delhi to play with, making most of the ism's which has divided the Nagas. Another thing is the fact that not an inch will be given from the neighboring States and if we press too hard, we will have the whole North Eastern States as our enemy.

One very said and unfortunate truth is some candidates who will be filing their nomination, are not politicians one bit. But due to the power bestowed upon them, they have seriously believed that they are invincible. But the end result will be disastrous, for they will make a fool of themselves (Joker Candidates) plus loose all their hard earned money and will have to go through a very dry phase in the near future. When we look into our History, the only King who did remain humble is still adored after thousands of years. But those Kings who were haughty and cruel, has never been spoken off, for their \legacy died with them. The humility of Solomon was amazing. Although he had everything on this earth, commanding powerful armies and also the son of David, he remained humble, thus till today we read about him and his wisdom. Why I take this as an example is, when we become powerful and start earning in crores, we tend to become so proud that we feel nothing on this earth is above them. But Solomon's wisdom had enabled him to foresee this, thus to warn the people he had written on pride many a times in the books of Proverb and Songs of Solomon. Pride destroys us, not only spiritually, but destroys everything we cherish, and thus our Physical and financial blessing is completely destroyed. I have learned this first hand, for there came a time when I thought that I could rule the world and pride had completely blinded me. Those who visited me would blow up my pride with their praises, but they were doing this just to get something out off me. Then when the time came, the carpet was literally pulled away from under my feet. For many years I struggled and so did my family, but as I got closer to God, he is slowly establishing my position in the society. I would never like people to go through what I went through; therefore it is my duty as a fellow Naga to warn another Naga. If he listens, well for him and if he does not, who cares? The truth about ourselves is rather harsh when corrected, but it is only those that care about you warns you, before one goes beyond his limit.

To be a politician, one has to learn the art of being able to adjust with anyone anymore regardless of their status or class, for this is where the votes come from. Some tribes has fortunately learned from their mistake, hence they remain silent till the day they have to vote. It is here where they show their discontent, and it is too late for the Candidate to smoothen things up. On the other hand there are tribes who continue to allow such unscrupulous politicians to use them as their wish, where they make a lot of money, whereas the public suffers. This is not right, plus an abomination to God Almighty, who had elevated such leaders to what they are now. Nagas have always been very politically educated, thus every house one visits, the only topic of conversation is politics. This is why I always say that politicians belong to the kitchen. I do not say this in a negative way, but it is in the hearths of every Naga family that politics is discussed. Thus, the support base for the politicians always emerges from the "kitchen talk."

In conclusion, the near future does not look very bright due to the recent turmoil in the ruling Government. This was one reason why SC Jamir was always considered a real politician. He had kept the MLA's of his party under a dictatorial vice, and he always had one person to spy on the other, thus the MLA's were very obedient. I still remember when he was the Chief Minister, during a party meeting all the MLA's were put up in one Hotel, and every night he would do his rounds like a warden. This was one reason MLA's of his party could not jump the fence, nor revolt against his leadership, for anyone who did, was literally destroyed. Now the scenario is just the opposite, for some senior leaders of the ruling party do not give two hoots about the directives given by the CM (be it verbal or in written). Hence our future politically looks very bleak and uncertain, for most of the senior Ministers think they are above (in seniority) their leader. The only solution we have today is let the Centre impose PR on our State, then, will they learn the facts of getting the cold shoulder. India has the second largest (next to China) armed forces, so if there is PR in the State, the Army will rule the nest, but apart from that, they will clean up our anti social elements. So the big question is, will the politicians actually allow this to happen? It all depends on their maturity, wisdom and good advice now. We are at the cross roads, therefore whether to go east or west, north or South, it is up to them. The only thing I can say is "let good and sensible senses prevail."
