Guv emphasizes role of commerce in shaping India

Dimapur, October 29 (MExN): Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar has underscored the role of commerce  in  shaping  the future of India as  an  emerging superpower. Addressing the silver jubilee celebrations of Public College of Commerce in Dimapur, at the IMC hall on Friday, the governor said presently India’s growth rate is the second highest in the world and that the country’s  economy was set for  brighter days.

India’s growth rate had jumped from 2% before the nineties to nearly 9% at present, and there are indications that by 2020, the country’s growth rate would touch 11%. The governor said the country had managed to tide over the global economic recession last year due to economic liberalization.

Referring to the proposed visit of US president Barak Obama to India in November, the governor said even the world’s superpower was compelled to take notice of India as an emerging economic power. With these global  economic  perspectives, Kumar congratulated the commerce college and its teaching faculty for their service. Governor Nikhil encouraged the students that they were studying a subject which would help India  retain her position as an  economic superpower in  the  long  run.

Kumar also expressed happiness over the college’s plan to introduce two new subjects – chartered accountancy and secretarial management. He assured that the state government would provide every “legitimate  help” to the college in its endeavor to give quality education.

Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof K Kannan, the guest of honour in today’s celebration, said in his  address that after a “slow beginning” the college has come a long way since it first started way back in 1985 with only five students. The college has also to redefine its role and set targets for the next 25 years, he said. Also, while empathizing with the financial constraints faced by most private colleges, Kannan said  the college has to  invest time to find quality teachers. Founder principal of PCC, Prof HR Ghosh Roy, who also spoke during the occasion, narrated the hardships the college had to  undergo  during  its  initial   stages.
