Kohima, January 7 (MExN): Gwayhunlo Lawrence Khing was ordained priest on January 4 by Most Rev. Joseph Mittathany, Arch Bishop Emeritus of Imphal at St. Joseph Parish, Tseminyu village.
Rev. Fr. Gwayhunlo Lawrence Khing is now the third priest from the Rengma tribe. Arch Bishop in His sermon said the church in North East is growing fast, adding the unlike recent past now the north east have priest and missionaries from its own soil. Today, he said, Fr. Lawrence has become a priest according to the order of Melchizedeck. He also spoke of apostle St. Thomas who evangelized the people of India two thousands year ago, and had over the years spread the message of Jesus Christ to this Far East.
During the ordination programme, Rev. Fr. Thomas John, the parish priest of St. Joseph Tseminyu gave a welcome note.
During the felicitation programme, R. Khing, parliamentary secretary for horticulture encouraged the young people to dedicate their lives and follow the example of Rev. Fr. Lawrence Khing for the service of God Kingdom. He also expressed gratitude to parents, friends and well wishers who had helped him in his journey to priesthood.
Other highlight of the day include folk song from St. Peter’s Catholic community Tesophenyu and R&Z Khel, Tseminyu village, speech on behalf of family members by David Khing, special song from Josephine while vote of thanks was pronounced by James, local catechist.
Stating this in a press release, Francis Kent said that around 40 priests officiated during the Eucharistic celebration and a host of sisters, brothers, government officials, special guests and delegates numbering more than 2,500 attended the celebration which was followed by feast.
