DIMAPUR, JANUARY 29 (MExN): Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) held its 41st general conference on Saturday, January 29 in Dimapur. The conference was hosted at the Rhododendron Hall, NAPTC, Chumukedima.
Commissioner & Secretary to the Chief Minister and Land Resources Development, L. Kire, IFS, graced the inaugural session of the day-long symposium.
Addressing the gathering Kire held that the state police services, be it of Nagaland or any other state, is the backbone of policing. “You’re the backbone and the cutting-edge of policing in the state”, he said while calling for the state police machinery to keep pace with the ever changing nature of crime.
Stating: “I do not intend to make a speech… rather I’d share some of my views… and hopefully provoke your thoughts”; he remarked: “The wind of change is here today in the Naga society.”
One positive change that is taking place is the number of Naga women that are joining the police service, he said. “We view policing job more as a man’s job, but with women joining the profession”, he averred will give a humane touch to the force. Putting forth cyber crime as an example, he held that the nature of crime is becoming more sophisticated by the day. Upgrading the police personnel’s knowledge of IT as well as sound professional comprehension, thus, becomes very crucial. On the same line, he further held that criminal investigations must be foolproof, so that it survives the scrutiny of the court.
After all is said and done, discipline and upholding an image of authority is what makes the uniformed personnel a cut above the rest, he averred. “You need to have pride in wearing your uniform”.
Particularly mentioning the blatant disregard shown by the public to traffic policemen on the road he said: “I think it’s time the police show your authority” with astute resilience, while adding it needs serious remedial contemplation by all concerned.
Further, he informed that the Chief Minister will be taking up matters related to the state police force with the Union Home Minister at the oncoming Chief Ministers’ Conference on Internal Security at Delhi.  A ‘Business Session’ followed later in the afternoon. DIG (Modernisation / CID), Renchamo P. Kikon gave a brief paper presentation on the topic: ‘Modernisation of Police – Micro and Macro Outlook’. The DIG in the report maintained that the police modernization scheme has been helpful. It nevertheless pointed out that infrastructure development, mobility and acquiring latest weapons are the major thrust areas. Emphasising on the training of the personnel, it called for imbibing a broader perspective.
On the welfare of the lower ranks, it called for providing better accommodation facilities to the lower ranks
