Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides, Flooding Across Wokha District

Morung Express News
Wokha | April 20

Following heavy rainfall on April 19, several parts of Wokha district have been affected by landslides and flooding, severely disrupting normal movement.

A landslide initially struck the Sanis–Lakhuti road near Sunglup Village, where mud and debris covered sections of the road and left commuters stranded. Although the affected stretch at Sunglup was later cleared and restored for vehicular movement, the situation worsened after a fresh landslide occurred further down towards the Sanis area, blocking the road once again.

According to commuters, manual labour alone will not be sufficient to clear the debris at the Sanis landslide site, and restoration will require heavy machinery such as a JCB.

In the meantime, commuters have been advised to avoid the PMGSY route and instead take the inner road via Sanis village until the affected stretch is fully cleared.

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall and strong flow of river water from upstream have led to flooding in several areas under Baghty Division such as Soku, Makharong, Upper Baghty.

At Soku, Makharong, and Upper Baghty, the roads have become non-commutable, with floodwaters covering the routes and blocking all vehicular movement. Commuters in these areas have been left stranded, facing serious difficulty in travelling.

The heavy downpour on the night of April 19 also caused the water level of the Baghty River to rise above its normal flow, posing a threat to irrigation, cultivations, and further disrupting the daily lives of residents in the region.
