Hornbill Festival 2025: Meluri hosts angling competition, launched association

Meluri, December 7 (MExN): Day 2 of the Hornbill Angling Festival 2025 was held at the Tizu River in Meluri on December 6, marked by the official launch of the Meluri District Anglers’s Association (MDAA)

Attending as the Special Guest, Advisor, New & Renewable Energy (N&RE) and Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Nyusietho Nyuthe highlighted the rapid changes in local river ecosystems, noting the increasing presence of non-native fish species threatening traditional native varieties.

He emphasised that fishing in Meluri is both a cultural practice and a livelihood source, calling conservation a shared responsibility.

The Advisor appreciated the Anglers’ Association Nagaland (AAN) for promoting responsible angling practices and raising awareness in the district.

He expressed hope that, with the involvement of AAN, local administration, and community support, sustainable river management measures could be developed. Nyuthe also urged the Fisheries Department to explore economic opportunities linked to the aquatic ecosystem.

The newly launched MDAA aims to conserve aquatic biodiversity, promote sustainable angling, and boost eco-tourism, according to the State DIPR.

During the festival, a magazine documenting AAN activities from 2013 to 2025 was released by Nyuthe.

The Angling competition concluded with Gagan Rai winning first prize, Siechutho second, and B. Imnachiba third, with prize money of Rs 1 lakh, Rs 50,000, and Rs 25,000, respectively, along with certificates.

The event was chaired by Y. Kent, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources (AR), with short addresses by Ronsennnungba, Director, Fisheries & AR, and Mhonbemo Ngullie, President, AAN.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by R Esther Angami, District Fishery Officer, Meluri.
