Horti deptt sets new schemes for Naga chillies, Naga cucumber

An amount of Rs. 200.00 lakhs is being projected by the state’s horticulture department for taking up some new schemes during 2007-08, in some new crops such as strawberry, kiwi, and some indigenous crops such as tree-tomatoes, Naga chillies, Naga cucumber etc.

This was stated in the Annual Administrative Report of the department tabled in the just concluded state assembly session.

Meanwhile, recognizing that floriculture gives the maximum returns per unit area in the minimum time span and most importantly the keen interest of the people, the department has taken up cultivation of floriculture on commercial since 2004-05.

During the last two years, the department’s focus was on the production and marketing of anthurium and lilium, but the year 2006-07, saw the emergence of the Naga roses as a potential export commodity in the global market.

The department’s farm at Yisemyong with its hi-tech structure and packaging, grading and cooling facility and under PPP, the report said.

“The department saw the sale of over 50,000 stems of roses and carnations in the last five months,” the report added.
