Scientists from Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR- CIFT) Kochi, Kerala are currently in the state capital Kohima to identify mechanism for fisheries development in Nagaland.
Dr. Femeena Hassan, Principal Scientist, ICAR- CIFT, maintained that Nagaland’s fisheries are unique in many ways, predominantly inland in nature, deeply interwoven with traditional practices and largely supported by small scale farmers, fishers, processors and market vendors, the sector which plays a crucial role in nutritional security, livelihood and rural economy of the state.
Addressing the inaugural function of the three day long workshop on “Quality aspects of Fish and Fishery Products with Demonstration of Formalin Kits” at the Directorate of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Kohima on February 3, she said that the outcome of the deliberations at the workshop wills serve as a strong foundation for future planning, targeted interventions and sustainable development of the fisheries sector in Nagaland.
She talked on prioritisation and need assessment of quality issues in Nagaland fisheries.
This workshop was reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts among the policy makers, technical institutes, field functionaries and stakeholders to ensuring the quality and safety interventions are not only scientifically sound but also socially acceptable and economically feasible for Nagaland, Dr.Hassan said.
Kevisa Kense, Chief Information Commissioner, Nagaland who graced the inaugural programme, requested that ICAR- CIFT to support the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources.
Stating that Nagaland possesses significant potential for fisheries development, he called for scientific and infrastructure intervention from ICAR- CIFT to boost local fish production.
Rongsennungba, Director, Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Nagaland said that fisheries development in Nagaland focuses on achieving self-sufficiency in fish production.
He said that department has been promoting aquaculture in ponds, paddy-cum-fish culture, and reservoirs.
Priya, E.R, Scientist & Session Coordinator, ICAR- CIFT, Dr. Martin Xavier, senior scientist, ICAR- CIFT, Dr. Laly SJ, Senior Scientist, ICAR- CIFT also spoke at the inaugural function.
The programme also witnessed practical demonstration and distribution of formalin detection kits.
The programme was chaired by Ketusielie Angami, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources while vote of thanks was proposed by Neithoo Kuotsu, Joint Director & State Coordinator, Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources.
This programme, organised by ICAR- CIFT under North Eastern Scheme in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Nagaland, will continue till February 5.
