ICAR imparts knowhow on cultivation of bio-fortified maize

Dimapur, August 30 (MExN): A training programme on scientific cultivation of bio-fortified maize was conducted at AK Industrial village of Dimapur district on August 25.

The training was conducted by ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema to create awareness about bio-fortified maize importance and to impart ‘know-how’ on scientific cultivation of bio-fortified maize.

A press release from ICAR, Nagaland Center Joint Director stated that, seed replacement ratio is very low (below 15%) in the state, mainly due to reliance on own saved seeds of traditional local landraces. 

During the programme, farmers were trained about scientific cultivation of bio-fortified maize hybrids, its nutritious value, importance and future prospects was discussed by Dr Harendra Verma, Scientist, Plant Breeding and Genetics, ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema. He also encouraged the farmers for scientific cultivation of bio-fortified maize hybrid varieties to meet out the increasing food and feed demand for human consumption and livestock respectively. 

A farmer- scientist interaction was also conducted in which queries related to hybrid seed importance, line sowing benefits, pest and disease management, weed and nutrient management was also discussed.
