Kohima, December 22 (MExN): The 67th session of the Yachem Students’ Union (YSU) cum 4th general conference was concluded on December 20 at Yachem village under the theme “Bridging the Gap” (Shingkung Shenteipü).

The session brought together students, leaders and community members and deliberated on the responsibilities of youth in a rapidly changing society.

Addressing the gathering during the conference as the guest speaker Dr Y Nuklu Phom, Chairman & Team Leader, LEMSACHENLOK, Longleng, emphasised that bridging the gap begins with identifying the real gaps within individuals and society.

Drawing from a sociological perspective, he outlined the stages of social progression from pioneers and implementers to critical thinkers and noted that the direction chosen by the present generation will shape the future.

Using the analogy of a thermometer and a thermostat, he stressed the importance of balancing external evaluation with internal self-regulation.

He further observed that despite technological advancement and easier lifestyles in the 21st century, societies are increasingly divided by class, culture, tribe, economic disparity, generational differences and technological barriers, urging the youth to build bridges rather than walls.

He also stressed the need to move beyond pride in past achievements and focus on continuous learning, skill development, adaptability, and character formation, especially in the post-COVID era.

Addressing the session as Special Guest on the last day, Dr M C Longai Phom, Jt Director (NSACS), DH&FW, Nagaland called upon students to reflect on what gaps they truly seek to bridge. He emphasized that meaningful change must begin at the individual and household levels before extending to the village and community.

He stressed coordination between students’ unions and village institutions, effective communication, mutual respect, and intergenerational understanding, while urging the youth to remain rooted in the rich cultural and traditional  identity.

Also addressing the gathering, L K Heno Khiamniungan, Assistant Commandant, VG, Longleng, challenged the youngsters to uphold the core principles of hard work, discipline, and sacrifice, stating that nothing substantial can be achieved without sacrifice.

He encouraged students to channelise their talents, strengths, and gifts with clarity of purpose, perseverance, and moral direction.

C Sham-e Phom, President, Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) delivered short speech.

The conference also witnessed special performance by guest artist Pelao Konyak and Changtongya Students’ Union.

Earlier, the program was chaired by C Lenke Phom, ARO, Longleng and T Yingnyümosa, President, LTSU while S Shaphen, Pastor, Alayung Baptist Church pronounced invocation.
