IHRC Tuensang holds for candlelight service for Hathras rape victim

A candlelight service was held for Hathras rape victim in Tuensang on October 10.

The event themed “Enfranchising Women” was organised by International Human Rights Council (IHRC) Tuensang Unit.

Speaking at the event Bendanglemla Chang, Assistant Professor, DIET Tuensang said that if such programme does not open the eyes of the people, such services would keep on happening.

Emphasising that the programme must be a turning point. she encouraged all present, particularly the women, to know their rights as “everyone is equal” before the law and the Indian Constitution guarantees “equality before the law.”

Stating that the legal rights, the fundamental rights and our basic rights guaranteed by the Constitution cannot be withdrawn even by the legislature, Chang urged them to be aware of such rights. 

“If we are complacent about our rights such thing will keep on happening. We, women should redefine ourselves to stand with dignity and respect,” she said. 

There is a special provision set aside for women in the Indian Constitution which is Zero FIR or virtual FIR and free legal aid, she added.  

“If we are aware of our rights, nobody will be able to touch us. Such education starts from our own kitchen,” she pointed out further posing, “When we are not able to teach our girl child or daughter in our home how can she be bold in the society?” 

Earlier, B Yemlong Chaba, IHRC State Vice Secretary, Nagaland briefed the gathering about the event and its background as well as the council activities.  

“IHRC has reached your doorstep and it is for human rights and voluntary services. It is focused on the weaker sections of the society. It is here in our district after officially being launched 1st August 2020,” Chaba stated.

“There is no size to intervene on any kinds of human rights violation. Either it is a physical harassment, discrimination or any kind of tribal or rural development activities,” he elaborated.

Short speeches were also delivered by Chang Sao Thangjam Setshang, Sangtam Women Organisation and Yimchunger Women.

The event was chaired by Kaimangchoba Chang, Media Officer IHRC, Tuensang and welcome note was given by BM Yanchu, President IHRC, Tuensang.The event was followed by candle lighting and silent prayer led by Achila, Evangelist IEF 3rd NAP Unit, Tuensang.
