Imposter arrested

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 28 (MExN): According to a delayed report from the police, one imposter masquerading as a ‘Subedar’ in the Assam Rifles was arrested in Dimapur on December 21 last. The imposter, now in judicial custody, was identified as one Chandra Kumar Chetri (40 years), originally of Madanrting village under East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya. He was arrested from the Assam Rifles Training Centre at 3rd Mile.
On December 21, Chetri had entered the ARTC using a fake identity card. He had identified himself as Hiralal Chetri, a serving ‘Subedar major’ in the 9th Assam Rifles to the RP personnel manning the entrance, the Officer In-charge of Diphupar Police Station, Among Jamir said. However, while coming out, the RP personnel got suspicious; and Chetri was stopped and frisked. In the process, 17 bogus documents used for illicitly enrolling aspiring candidates into the Assam Rifles were found in his possession. Further search led to the discovery of 20 copies of clandestinely acquired ‘admit cards’, one pair of Assam Rifles jersey, two pairs of shoulder flaps indicating rank as ‘subedar’, and one whistle guard were found.
He was immediately taken into custody and handed over to Diphupar Police station where a case was registered. He was booked under sections 465, 468, 140 and 198 of the IPC.
Two more persons were also arrested. They were identified as Ajay Daimary (22 years) and Dipen Basumatary (39 years), both hailing from Assam. The former was said to be one of the many candidates, who had tried their luck at the recently concluded recruitment rally conducted by the Assam Rifles at the ARTC & S, Shoxuvi, Dimapur from December 2 to 21. The latter was said to be the personal driver of Chetri.
Further interrogation of Chetri revealed that he makes his living sashaying as a ‘middleman’, that is, illicitly helping recruit candidates into the armed forces while using nefarious ways and means. His price to broker deals ranged from Rs. 50, 000 to 1, 00, 000. He had based himself in Dimapur since the beginning of December, coinciding with the recruitment drive conducted by the Assam Rifles. During the period before his eventual arrest on December 21, he had lodged at a hotel in Dimapur.
