Inferior construction MS rods sold in Dimapur?

Dimapur | June 26

One alert citizen of Dimapur has brought to notice the quality of construction materials being sold in the state’s commercial hub. A letter was received by The Morung Express on Tuesday, June 26 informing of this. The letter appended by one Mrs. Lucy stated that MS (mild steel) rods bought from one well known hardware store near the Clock Tower junction broke in half when the rods were cut and bent to make reinforcement ‘rings’ for concrete pillars.

“I purchased MS Rod of various sizes of 8mm, 12mm and 16mm from the shop… at City Tower. However, when the 8mm MS rod was bent at right angle to make ring for the post, it broke,” the citizen in the letter stated. The name of the company – one ‘Satyam Pvt. Ltd.’ – was imprinted in the bars while it also bore the ISI watermark, the note added. “As per the norms, the rod should be of certain standard of flexibility but in this case, the temper of the rod was so strong that it broke when it was bended which is totally dangerous for construction purpose.”

The citizen in the letter surmised other consumers might have also come across such substandard building material, only not brought to the notice of the public or the authorities in concern; while adding such defective material will endanger lives.

When the citizen was contacted, it was learned that she immediately returned to the store from where the steel bars were bought. The people at the store were told that a complaint will be lodged at the consumer rights court. Hearing the complaint, the store assured to lodge a complaint with the company in concern and the defective steel rods replaced. The citizen is also yet to hear from the store whether the complaint has been lodged. The incident brings to the fore, the question of how seriously or rather effectively the authorities are monitoring the quality products sold in the market.
