KIPHIRE, OCTOBER 4 (MExN): The International Day of the Girl Child was observed on October 3 at the DPDB Hall in Kiphire, with EAC Takatemjen Pongon as the special guest. The event was organized by the District Administration, the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), and the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative under the theme “Girls' Vision for Future.”
In his address, EAC Pongon highlighted the government's efforts to provide platforms and resources aimed at empowering girls to become responsible members of their families and society. He emphasized the importance of a weeklong observance of the International Day of the Girl Child, designed to envision a better future for young girls.
Pongon also spoke about the establishment of the District Hub for Empowerment of Women and the Sakhi One Stop Centre, which offers support and redress for women facing various forms of harassment and abuse. He explained the significance of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, which aims to protect women from sexual harassment in all its forms, including objectification and derogatory remarks.
Additionally, he informed attendees about the creation of Internal Complaint Committees in every department and a Local Complaint Committee in the district, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner. This initiative is intended to facilitate the reporting of grievances through the SHE-Box portal.
Earlier, the program began with an invocation prayer by Viliho Awomi, District Mission Coordinator of DHEW. To commemorate the day, a competition featuring extempore speeches and slogan writing was held, with participation from students across various schools in Kiphire town.
The event was coordinated by Limitsung Sangtam, Specialist in Financial Literacy at DHEW, showcasing the commitment of the district to empower girls and promote their rights.
