International Human Rights Day observed in Dimapur

Dimapur, December 10 (MExN): International Human Rights Day was observed at the Assisi Auditorium in Lake View Colony, Dimapur, with a program emphasizing the importance of human rights, legal awareness, and cybercrime prevention. The event, held on December 10, was organized by the NDWM Nagaland Region under the theme "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now," in collaboration with the Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA), Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID), and All Nagaland Domestic Workers Union.

The program was chaired by Lumtsula Elizabeth A. and began with an invocation by Phangphi. In her welcome address, Sr. Pramila, Director of ACID and NDWM, emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, which underscores the urgent need to claim and protect human rights. She highlighted the contributions of domestic workers and Self-Help Group (SHG) members, describing them as the backbone of society and urging collective action for a just and inclusive community.

Adv. Sangto Longchar, a panel lawyer with DDLSA, elaborated on the universal nature of human rights and their constitutional foundations, referencing Articles 12-35 on equality and Article 39 on access to justice. He also detailed the free legal aid available to marginalized groups, including individuals with annual incomes below Rs 1 lakh. Reflecting on the atrocities of the 1940s and the subsequent adoption of International Human Rights Day by the United Nations in 1948, he urged the audience to uphold these rights sincerely and respectfully.

Adv. Rokovitsu Khate addressed the growing threat of cybercrimes, particularly their impact on women, citing cases of sextortion, cyberbullying, phishing, and online scams. He urged victims to file FIRs promptly and stressed the importance of using technology responsibly to avoid falling prey to fraud.

Adv. Priya highlighted the role of domestic workers' unions in advocating for justice and encouraged participants to collectively raise their voices against injustice. Chairperson Lumtsula Elizabeth concluded the program by emphasizing caution against online scams, including the RGA fraud that has affected individuals in Nagaland. She urged attendees to share these insights with their communities to enhance vigilance.

The event concluded with a summary and closing remarks by Sr. Jobina and a vote of thanks from Ms. Tsulula, an NDWM animator. Over 335 participants attended the program, which ended with a photo session.
