Intro to early childhood education

Dimapur, January 27 (MExN): A “Preschool Teachers Training Course ECD- Step 1(Level 1) was held from January 23 to January 27 at the School premises of Stepping Stones, situated at Duncan, adjacent to Shri. Ramakrishna Society, Dimapur. The training was jointly organized by Apple Kindergarten, Purana Bazaar and Stepping Stones. 

The resource persons for the training were Mrs. Dina Lama Kramer and Pushpa Sunuwar Bayak from Early Childhood Education Centre (ECEC) Ltd, Kathmandu, Nepal. The course consisted of 20 hours education philosophy, play-way method, and ten hours of practical. The course is a short introduction to early childhood education. 

AkhonoYhonzone, Board member of Stepping Stones stated that 25 trainees from Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, and Tuensang participated. She also said that the trainees were teachers of Montessori Schools, administrators of Schools, heads of institutions and even a mother. Akhono termed the teachers training as a complete package for what’s required for a pre-school. 

Resource person, Dina Lama Kramer explained that one of the methods of teaching involved is the ‘Thematic Approach’, where one theme per month is selected and all the subjects of math , sciences etc are incorporated along that theme. She also explained that another method, the play-way is a natural way of learning for children, which develops physical, social, emotional and cognitive aspects of the child. She further stated that traditional method of learning focuses only on mental development, whereas in ‘Thematic Approach’, the holistic development of the child can be achieved and there is also continuous assessment applied everyday. 

The training covered interesting topics like knowing children, classroom management, characteristic of a teacher, child development, holistic approach, table games, interactive learning etc.
