INTROSPECT: 250TH YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE OF THE USA

DR JOHN MOHAN RAZU

United States of America on July 4th 1776 became as an independent sovereign nation. To mark the occasion, mega celebrations have been organized in all the parts of America studded withgaiety and grand clebrations, festivities, exhibitions, pageants, and fireworks. In these 250-years America reached its zenith economically, technologically, militarily and thus considered to be the world’s number one country vested with power and economic capital. It became an economic giant and technological citadel. It believes in kaleidoscopic capitalism and accrued more profits and benefits. It has also shown its military superiority whenever it is put to test.

At the same time, the past and the present should never be forgotten. It is the bast time to introspect. Americawhat it is now because of the ‘slaves’ and immigrants. It is the country of immigrants. America prospered by the contributions of slaves and immigrants. Slave trade was an accepted norm then and immigrants landed into America in huge numbers to be better-off from all parts of the globe. Therefore, America is a confluence of cultures. Whites, blacks, yellows and browns show unity in diversity. America is basically known for its diversity in terms of culture, faith, and many others. It is bestowed with many colours—like the rainbow.

In view of its superiority in technology and armaments, America has the tendency to assume as if it is the global police man. There are leaders in the past and at present who unjustly waged wars and entered into conflicts with others. Because of its economic and military superiority, it assumes all the time that ‘might is right’, which somehow triggered leaders then and now. Therefore, America on a number of times over-stepped its authority and started meddling with the internal affairs of other sovereign nation-states. In order to become unipolar power in the world thus keep pushing its dictates on number of occasions into the terrains of others, and was forced to retreat or faced defeat.  Its policy has always been ‘divide and rule’.

United States of America is currentlyhighly polarized and deeply divided nation. It has moved from accommodation to insular that echoes ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA), reinforcing ‘whites’ have the right to live and others should leave America saying even those born in America having outside linage. The current president has invoked laws and regulations that deport those foreign nationals and refused visas to those accompanying the team and invited by FIFA for umpiring those who the president thinks should not enter. Behind the fireworks, all sorts of racist chants and attacks keephappening. The president of America keeps bullying those countries who refused to submit to his dictates and threatened them waging wars.

America has deviated from unity and non-partisanship. Instead of healing the wounds, Donald Trump has been dividing and adding white nationalism and stringent immigration policies. 1776 Declaration echoed democracy, freedom, and equality, the path towards peace. This is the time to restoring the values unity, bringing peace and prosperity. America is known for tolerance and goodwill for all across the world, but has disappeared conveying hatred and anger. Recounting those ideals, the then president Gerald Ford in 1976 said in his jubilee address that the American institutions and agencies should work for all and not for select people.

Current American President is all out vilifying those who belong to the opposition political parties who disagrees with him. Based on his emotions and instinct, he has reverted those policies that assures citizenship and work permits. The foundational principles enshrined in the American constitution by and large have been violated and trampled upon. On a number of occasions, the American president has trampled upon the constitution and the supreme court of America pronounced justice as said in the constitution. Recounting 250 years of Independence, it is the fitting for the president and the Americans to introspect where their country is heading for.

Showing enmity to countries and people within is antithetical to the founding principles of American Constitution.Founding ideals on which America stands and those institutions established are for all the people of America, despite origin, identity, religion, colour, class and race. Nowadays America shows partisanship and blatant violation of individual freedom. There is no respect to the rule of law.

This is the opportune time for America to repent and retrieve those foundational principles so that America will gain confidence and respect among the people and countries across the world.

We live in a multi-polar world. There are countries that have developed economically, militarily, and technologically. America’s influence is presently has come to the lowest point ever. The countries such as China, Russia, India, and few more have come much closer and see the growing hegemon and power shifts happening across the world. Even in its war against Iran American dictate hardly worked. America has lost its confidence amongst the EU countries as none of the countries came to America’s plea to join the war against Iran.

Similarly, America in its unholy alliance with Israel, supplying armaments and others in Gaza Strip is being strongly questioned by the majority of the countries and they expressed objections and voted against USA and Israel in the UNGA and UN Security Council.  America is isolated by many countries in the world. Its belief in weapons and money shall never help as America is amidst the comity of nations and so we live in a inter-dependent world. America should seriously introspect that it cannot exist in isolation, but in cooperation with others. As it celebrates its 250th year of Independence, it is proper and apt for the United States of America to introspect so that America could once against regains its respect and dignity.
