Investing in our planet: Earth day celebrated across Nagaland 

Earth Day 2022 was celebrated by the Divisional Forest Office, Mokokchung on April 22, 2022 under the theme ‘Invest in Our Planet.’ The Divisional Forest Officer, Dr Sentitula IFS challenged all the officers and staff to examine the life sustaining ecosystems on which we all depend which is unique and is needed for our existence and sustenance of life. Dimapur, April 22 (MExN):  In view of Earth Day 2022, various organisations and educational institutions conducted awareness programmes and other activities across the state of Nagaland on April 22, according to press releases received here. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Invest in Our Planet.’

Government Polytechnic Seithekema-C: The Media Cell of Government Polytechnic Seithekema-C informed that Senior Lecturer Imnasangba Jamir delivered the keynote address, emphasising on how Earth Day was equally important to other environmental awareness days.

The day’s events included a tree planting activity wherein each person planted two trees. The trees carried name tags of the person who planted them, so as to inculcate a sense of personal responsibility in taking care of the plants, the press release informed.

Principal Er Zhapulhoulie Rüpreo also delivered a short speech reflecting on the history of Earth Day, it said.

Rüpreo is said to have urged the students and attendees to not only develop awareness about the environmental issues affecting Earth but also to influence others, especially law makers and legislators so that they come up with more effective policies to protect and preserve the planet and the environment. He also thanked Imkongsunep, Range Officer, Chümoukedima for donating tree saplings and concluded the speech by reiterating that what is done for the planet today is not only for us, but for the future generation as well, the release stated.

The formal function came to a close after benediction by Er Shohekato after which the tree planting and other social work activities started. 

AIDA-SBI Gram Seva: The ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) - Don Bosco which implements SBI Foundation Gram Seva programme in Dimapur, marked the occassion by distributing three different varieties of fruit tree saplings to its five adopted villages— Khriezephe, Diezephe, Urra, Bade, and Tsithrongse. The planting of the fruit bearing saplings was carried out by the remedial students, teachers, village Gram Sevas, and Gram Seva Committee members, a press release informed.

The release stated that Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22, as a reminder to protect the environment, restore damaged ecosystems and to live a more sustainable life and protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation.

On the occasion, AIDA, through SBI Gram Seva took the initiative to spread awareness about environmental protection and acknowledge the global climate crisis, with its adopted villages by planting at least three varieties of tree saplings nearby their homestead to show support. The objective was also to inculcate the importance of protecting the planet and to encourage everyone to practice planting more and more trees and ensure its longevity for generations to come.

MHBHSS: At the Ministers Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School, Kohima, the occasion was celebrated in pursuant with the recommendation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2022, to provide exposure beyond the classroom. With zeal and co-operation from the students and the supervision of the teachers, various enrichment activities were held for different classes to sensitise students on conserving biodiversity, a press release informed.

Students of Classes 1 to 4 were engaged in watching a nature themed movie to enhance their curiosity about nature and science while students of Class 5 were given one pot each to plant their favourite vegetable and teach them hands-on activities about growing organic vegetables and its nutritional benefits.

As per the release, a Collage Competition, themed on Nature, was held for Classes 6 and 7 whereby, the students displayed their creativity using only elements of nature. An exposure visit for students of Class 8 to R Belho Wildlife Breeding Home was made to appreciate and understand the interconnectedness between flora and fauna which was followed by pot luck. 

Further, to embed a conscious mind, a Recycling Art Competition was conducted for Classes 9 and 10, wherein the students projected an array of value oriented art piece to protect and preserve our planet, the release stated.

PWC, Dimapur: Meanwhile, the Eco-Club of Pranabananda Women’s College, Dimapur celebrated the Earth Day with the main objective to spread awareness among the students about the importance of healthy environment, and how to protect the components of mother Earth.

The President of Students’ Union, PWC Sharmila Sharma delivered a speech on the theme and emphasized on every individual efforts to maintain green environment. A seminar on the topic ‘The Importance of Rainwater Harvesting to Conserve Water’ was presented by Purnima Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science, PWC, the release stated.

The programme was chaired by Sushmita Deb of BA 6th Semester and was attended by the teaching faculty and students of the college. The programme ended with planting saplings in the college campus, it added.
