Kuhuboto, June 24 (MExN): In an attempt to create awareness on environmental importance and to conserve trees, the Kuhuboto Ghakhu Students’ Union (KGSU) is organizing a tree plantation week, which started today at Kuhuboto town. Besides, KGSU is organizing its first Inter-Unit Cricket Tournament to mark the occasion of plantation drive.
Jacob Zhimomi, MLA and Chairman, Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN) graced the inaugural function of the week long programme as chief guest and kick started the plantation drive by planting the first sapling at local ground, Kuhuboto which was followed by plantation of a sapling each around the ground by the 24 teams that are participating in the tournament.
Delivering a short speech, the chief guest said conserving bio-diversity should be a concern of all, stating that planting a tree today would make our days to come better. He was of the view that people, instead of spending lots of money on constructing boundary walls should opt to plant trees along their boundary. That will not only save money, but will have dual benefit of demarcating the boundary and helping the environment, he said. Further, Jacob encouraged the people of Kuhuboto area to participate in the plantation drive and urged the public of the area to make a pledge to save the world by planting a tree each.
On the development of the town, Jacob said that all, irrespective of different organizations and groups, should work together for the progress of the town and not harbor partisan attitude.
Lauding the KGSU for organizing the cricket tourney as part of the plantation drive, Jacob said all youngsters should be motivated to take up games and sports as part of their curricular activities, for it has become an integral part of our life as a medium of education, to earn money, etc.
The inaugural function was attended by host of GBs, chairmen, elders and leaders from the area. K. Kakiye Zhimo, president, KGPO hosted the inaugural function that was chaired by Toni H. Aye, women coordinator, ANCSU. Shikiho Yeptho, pastor KTBC said the invocation, and Kakiye Zhimo said the welcome address. Botoi V. Yeptho, advisor KGSU proposed the vote of thanks while Hovika Zhimo, youth leader, S. Hotovi BC pronounced the vote of thanks. The winner of the tournament will walk away with a cash prize of Rs. 20,000 along with certificates while runners-up will receive Rs. 10,000 with certificates. Individual prizes would also be given away.
