Jamir calls for a new spirit to revive society

‘Naga society is groaning from self-inflicted wounds’

Mokokchung, January 6 (MExN): The 5th general conference of the Akhoya Students’ Union commenced at Akhoya village (some sixty kilometers away from Mokokchung town) on Thursday with former Governor of Goa & Maharashtra Dr SC Jamir as the chief guest. The general conference is being held on the theme ‘Students in a competitive world’ with Associate Professor of Government College Dimapur, Alemla as the main speaker.

The chief guest, Dr SC Jamir while speaking at the opening programme challenged the youths to be an agent of change in the society. Saying that the Naga society is groaning from self-inflicted wounds, Jamir urged the youths especially the students to be resolute, determined and united in bringing about a change in the society.

Besides, saying that the Naga society is slowly dying, Jamir urged for a new spirit to revive the society – that spirit, he maintained, should be the spirit of determination, objectivity and unity.

He also asserted that there are no honest people in the society, and said that people are afraid to speak out the truth simply because they are afraid and because they might be threatened by one group or the other if they speak the truth.

In this regard, he challenged the youths whether they want to live in fear or not; he pointed out that it was the duty of the youths to speak out the truth without fear or inhibition.

The main speaker at the function, Associate Professor Alemla Imsong while speaking on the topic ‘Students in a competitive world’ stressed on the qualities that are needed to succeed in a modern competitive world. She said that a good competitor should have the qualities of having a clear goal in life, setting priorities, persistent and hard-working, accountability and self appraisal and one having a healthy physical well-being.

Saying that competition brings out the best in a person, Alemla Imsong said that life would be very dull if there were no competition in this world. However, she reminded the students to be aware of the dangers of over competition since people for the sake of wining often cheats and go off the tracks while trying to achieve something in life. She also cautioned about the dangers of stress and depression which one usually undergoes trying to achieve in life. She encouraged the students to have character in life so that they might succeed in life.

Earlier, Pastor of Akhoya Baptist Church invoked God’s Blessing at the conference while the chairman of the Akhoya Kosasanger Putu welcomed the gathering.
