JLF reiterates call for early Naga solution

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 19 (MExN): The Parliamentary Working Committee of Joint Legislators' Forum on the Naga political issue today appealed to the negotiating parties especially to the Government of India to expedite the ongoing Indo-Naga political dialogue so that an early and negotiated political settlement that is honorable and acceptable to the people is arrived at the earliest possible.


A press note from Benjamin Newmai, Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Nagaland informed that the JLF held a meeting today under the chairmanship of Zhaleo Rio, Chairman, JLF cum Speaker-in-charge. Nagaland State Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio along with all members of the Nagaland State Assembly representing different political parties participated in the discussions and adopted several resolutions.


The House acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of all sections, “especially the Naga nationalists and their families who have selflessly worked and fought for the rights of the Nagas.” It also appreciated the role of civil societies, mass based civil society organisations, the Church, Tribal Hohos, NGOs and all other sections that have positively contributed towards the Naga political issue reaching thus far. The efforts towards unity and reconciliation are acknowledged and placed on record, it added.


The meeting appreciated the Government of India for its “sincerity in the ongoing negotiations and for its accommodative and inclusive approach and for its widespread consultations with all sections.” While welcoming the participation of the different Naga National Political Groups who have come forward and joined the negotiations with the Government of India with the sincere efforts to resolve the Indo-Naga political conflict, the meeting appealed to all other groups to come forward and join the negotiations and participate in the peace talks so that the final solution is inclusive.


It also acknowledged the various organisations, civil society groups and the masses for organizing peaceful and democratic rallies appealing for early resolution of the Indo-Naga political problem.


Meanwhile, the JLF conveyed its condolences on the demise of late Gen (Rtd) Kholi Konyak who passed away on December 12 at New Delhi. “His contributions and sacrifices towards the Naga political movement will remain acknowledged by all generations to come,” it stated.


The meeting further reiterated the stand of the State Government and the Nagaland Legislative Assembly to pave the way for any alternative arrangement that may come about from the political solution which is “honourable and acceptable to the people.”


It also placed on record the commitment towards the “democratic desire of the Naga people to live together under one administrative umbrella,” while appealing to all sections, especially the civil society groups and hohos, to have confidence in the strengthening of the Naga family and come together under a spirit of oneness “so that we collectively work towards unity and not towards fragmentation of the Naga family.”
