Panel talk stresses ethical living, navigating digital paradox, education reform and entrepreneurial clarity

Khensa, January 3 (MExN): The 10th triennial Walu Aten of Khensa Kaketshir Telongjem (KKT) concluded at Khensa village held under the theme ‘Putusen Yayim’ (The way of life in the new era) from December 28 to 30.

The event witnessed participation from 387 delegates representing seven units: Amenyong (35), Mokokchung town (26), Dimapur (48), Kohima (46), Yimyu Ward (100), Yimtsüng village (67), and Kongrokong (65).

Advisor for Labour & Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Moatoshi Longkumer, attended as the chief guest, while Dr Arenla Walling, Additional Director of Health and Family Welfare, was the guest of honour.

A key highlight was the release of the second edition of the ‘Khensa Mongsen Yusa’ language book by Alemyapang Longchar, ADC of Chiephobozou.

The programme also featured a panel discussion moderated by Dr Akumsenla Kichu, Guest Faculty at Tezpur University's Centre for Distance and Online Education in Assam.

The panel included Akumwapang Longchar, youth promoter from Alempang Baptist Arogo; Akangjungla, Editor of The Morung Express; Dr Moakum, Assistant Professor at Kohima Science College; and Er Atoba Longkumer, co-founder of Tabernacle Technologies.

The panel discussion navigating tradition and technology in modern Naga society highlighted the complex interplay between cultural identity, digital transformation and economic evolution.

Akumwapang Longchar, Youth Promoter at Alempang Baptist Arogo, emphasized the enduring relevance of religion. “Even in a rapidly changing, technology-driven age, religion continues to matter not as mere comfort or future hope, but as a way of life that provides moral meaning, formation, and guidance for living responsibly amid the tensions between tradition and change,” he stated.

Akangjungla, Editor, The Morung Express, articulated the dual-edged nature of the digital era for the Naga community. “We stand at a fascinating crossroads in history. We are the Naga people, proud of our rich oral traditions and tight-knit communities. Yet, our daily lives are now deeply intertwined with the glow of smartphone screens,” she said.

She described social media as a “central part of daily life” and a “new lens” for the youth, presenting a “powerful paradox” of unprecedented connection alongside profound risks to "our minds, our livelihoods, and our very social fabric.”

From an academic standpoint, Dr Moakum Kichu, Assistant Professor at Kohima Science College, called for a focus on critical educational pillars: “Adaptation to education reforms and preparedness beyond fundamental education.”

On entrepreneurship front, Er Atoba Longkumer, Co-founder of Tabernacle Technologies, stressed the need to distinguish it from traditional business and self-employment, noting that the terms are often incorrectly used interchangeably.

“Not everyone who runs a business is an entrepreneur, and that business and entrepreneurship are two distinct paths, neither superior to the other,” he asserted. His talk outlined three key enablers for modern entrepreneurship: Technology as a leveller, culture and the need to reduce stigma around failure, and skills, particularly self-learning and deep skill development in an AI-driven world.

The newly elected office bearers of the Khensa Students Union were announced: President: Walunir Kichu (Tzüto); Vice President: Lipokakum Longchar (Kongrokong); General Secretary: Alipokla Longchar (Tenem); Assistant General Secretary: Lendila Longchar (Yimyu).

The 11th Walu Aten will be held in the year 2028.
