Khiamniungan Union appreciates NSHRC for action on custodial death case

Chümoukedima, February 21 (MExN): The Khiamniungan Union Chümoukedima (KUC) has expressed appreciation to the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) for taking suo motu cognizance of the custodial death of Late Pashu Khiamniungan in Chümoukedima Police Station on October 3, 2023.

In a statement, the KUC noted that the Commission, after recognising the negligence of police personnel on duty, had directed the award of compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the bereaved family.

The victim’s family has since received the compensation, in addition to disciplinary actions taken by the Government against those involved.

According to the Union, these measures have brought “a measure of relief” to the family in their time of grief.

The KUC, along with the bereaved family, also acknowledged individuals and groups who extended support during the period, while appreciating the “proactive role” of the NSHRC in upholding the rights of vulnerable citizens and ensuring accountability of public authorities.

It further encouraged citizens to approach the Commission in cases of human rights violations, stating that it remains a vital forum for redressal and the protection of human dignity.
