Kohima: GC Zakievilhou Zinyu of Khonoma village, Kohima district who was under training in the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA) Chennai has passed out and commissioned as Lieutenant, March 18. He has been commissioned into the prestigious Intelligence Corps and will first serve a one-year tenure attachment with the Infantry battalion of 11 JAK (Jammu and Kashmir) Rifles, currently based in Guwahati by May. Prior to the attachment he will be attending 3 weeks orientation training at Military Intelligence Training Centre Pune beginning second week April.
On being asked why he opted to join the Army when he can also do well elsewhere, he said, “everybody has acquired skills and expertise, some even inborn. If I have any, I wanted to use them and give the best of my time and energy to the country while serving in the Army”
Zinyu was actively involved in the Creative Writing Club in the Academy and was also an editorial member of the OTA Journal. He won Book Prize from the commandant OTA for securing first in the Club activities. He also won the Mahar Regimental Gold Medal for Essay Contest besides other literary competition prizes. On record, he passed the physical, academics, service subjects and swimming test in the first attempt, and scored excellent grades in 2.4 km run, 5 km BPET and ranked 96 in 12.5 km Cross Country among near about 490 trainees of his batch. During the training he held an appointment rank of Sergeant. Down the memory lane of the Academy he will be always remembered as ‘A Silent Worker’ as popularly attributed by his comrades and officers.
Zinyu has come a long way from a village boy wearing broken shoes and patched trousers to now becoming an officer. Born on 22 November 1980, Zinyu is the 6th sibling of 7 children of late Megolato Justin Zinyu of Khonoma village. He passed his matriculation first division in 1997 from Don Bosco School Kohima, PU (SC) from Science College Jotsoma and joined the Children Christian School Kohima as an assistant teacher while continuing his degree. In 2004, he graduated from Kohima Arts college and was also an active member No. 1 Air Sqn. Nagaland of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during 1997 to 2000. Zinyu’s feat is an inspiring example of hard work, sincerity and dedication between poverty and opportunity to achieve ones dream.
