Akuhaito, January 8 (MExN): Principal Secretary, Environment, Forest & Climate Change; Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, and Parliamentary Affairs, Y Kikheto Sema graced the 57th conference of the Coco Area Students’ Union as the special guest at Akuhaito on January 6.
Addressing the gathering, Sema recalled the hardships faced by the Coco area—comprising four villages—around 35 years ago, when the region lacked road connectivity and basic infrastructure. Despite fertile land and good agricultural yield, he said transportation challenges forced farmers to carry produce as head-loads and depend on barter trade.
He noted that in spite of these challenges, students from the area pursued education with determination, producing three MLAs, a Judge, an IAS officer, and several Directors and Secretaries.
Emphasising the importance of education, Sema urged students to study with dedication and excel in various fields, while also preserving cultural identity and using their mother tongue.
While acknowledging developmental progress, he said much more remains to be done and stressed the need for unity, cooperation and social harmony for all-round development. He also highlighted the role of the Church in fostering peace and called for collective efforts guided by the conference motto, “Synergy in Action.”
The 57th conference of the Coco Area Students’ Union was held from January 6 to 8, 2026. Other speakers included Kahuto Sema, GB, and Yevito Chisho, retired Director, SCERT.
