‘Killings responsible for Naga disintegration on all fronts’ – CPO

Dimapur, May 20 (MExN): Strongly reminding that the killing between the various Naga underground groups is not only robbing the people of their lives, shattering families and putting at stake the fragile economy of Nagaland, the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) maintained that it was deepening the disunity among “us”.

To end all these, the CPO stated that it had brought together on various platforms the Chakhesang national workers from both the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) and the NSCN (IM) since the year 2003 through 2005 for deliberations on the original and ultimate goal of Naga nationalism. Besides, the issues considered responsible for the misunderstanding, splits and killing on one hand and the available means to built mutual respect for each other at least among the Chakhesangs on the other, on the basis of forgiveness all to help restore unity for the goal is imperative, it added.

“And while the CPO has been appreciated much for pioneering the thoughtful initiatives, not long ago one functionary of the FGN as uncrowned champion of the Shillong Accord and Transit Camp appeared on the scene of Naga public and fired his poisoned dart at CPO terming it as ‘Anti-Naga and Indian sponsored Agency’” the CPO in a press statement issued through Vedayi Nyekha, President and Zhonyi Rhi, Joint secretary stated. This statement has led to sensitizing the people of Chakhesang tribe to (introspect) our position, status and investments that we have made towards Naga struggle all these years with deep conviction and unwavering dedication, it stated. “Yet in the wisdom of the CPO replying to such barbs may give more benefit to our adversaries than to Naga society and therefore decided to remain non-reactionary in the hope that better sense would prevail by recantation. Indeed, there was clarification but found to be more haphazard than sincere” the organization stated. The CPO also took cognizance that a similar salvo was fired at Chakhesangs by ‘Brigadier Niki Sumi of NSCN (K) as ‘being misused and misled by NNC (Accordists) and that Chakhesangs are misled into believing “that those who go against the NNC are going against the plebiscite of 1951’ which appeared in the local dailies. “All these allegations created an impression that as though the Shillong Accord of 1975 was signed due to the folly of Chakhesang tribe and secondly as if CPO sponsors the Transit Camp, Kohima and its inmates” the CPO stated and in this regard clarified on the following points.

In reference to the NNC, the CPO reaffirmed on the principles of NNC which it stated was a movement and an institution and expect all to recognize NNC, considering it as the legitimate ground where Nagas must meet and unite again for a better future. On the Shillong Accord, the organization stated that the accord was undertaken by the “underground representatives on their own volition and we believe it must be done for a reason, believe it or not”. On the Transit Camp, the CPO maintained that it is a “by-product” of the Shillong Accord and as enough has been said that the CPO has been appealing to Chakhesang Peace Campers to vacate it in the greater interest of the Nagas. Furthermore, in reference to the “initiative” the CPO questioned who among responsible and sensible Nagas, be it community or individual does not bother about what has been ailing the Naga society today since none can escape from the affliction of the ongoing political imbroglio. “Whereas we strongly believe that understanding will be possible through sharing and reconciliation, Chakhesangs are fully convinced and confident of what the CPO is trying in this regard. Do not term us Anti-Naga because you might term another community so tomorrow” the CPO cautioned.

The organization also stated that it is time for the Nagas to learn lessons from the mistakes committed in the past. “For instance, had it not been for the leadership ego, something horrible would have been achieved out of the six rounds of talk during the 1960s. The same should not be repeated today lest we will destroy ourselves before our enemies destroy us” the CPO asserted.
