Kiphire not prepared to handle major fire

Kiphire | February 25 : A massive fire broke out in at the private resident of a retired PA to Deputy Commissioner last night around 8:00 pm at Rest House Colony Kiphire. No casualties were reported. The loss of property was put to over ` 20 lakh worth. According to source the fire which burned down the bedroom and the living room to ashes, is believed to have stated from a candle from the bedroom of the children. It was brought under control by DEF Kiphire, Assam Riffles, Red Cross members, citizens & well-wishers risking ones lives in the fire.
Interacting with the correspondent from the site of the fire, the Deputy Commissioner, Kiphire said, “We should have fire tender in the district which is a must. He lamented that ‘had there been a fire tender, the fire could have been averted but how can citizens who are ill trained fight fire.’ The DC also commented that government should look into the genuine grievances of the district like fire tender which is very important and added that he will write to the concern authority and also take the matter in the DPDB on priority. On being asked about the preparedness of the district administration if such case arises in the future the DC said, “Even the DEF and Assam Rifles is not a battalion, so the if such case arises in the future fate lies in the hands of God alone.”
The DC who is also the Chairman of the IRCS Kiphire along with the M.C members assisted cash and distributed relief material to the victims. Ex-MLA R.L Akumbe who was also on the side of the incident, cheering the volunteers to bring down the fire commented, “Government is only in Kohima and Dimapur and not for the rest of the Nagas” and expressed displeasure to the government for “not providing fire tender to remote place like Kiphire which is very necessary.”
Senior citizens at the site of the incident said, ‘When the district was inaugurated in the year 2004 government has brought one fire tender but after few days it not seen for years.’ He also said that had there been a fire tender, fire could have been averted and expressed regret to the authorities for not being able to provide basic amenities to its citizens.
It may be mentioned that Kiphire got the status of district in the year 2004 and even after the lapses of 7 (seven) the government could not even provide basic amenities like fire tender. The nearest fire station for Kiphire is Tuensang which is 122 Km from the district.
Mention may also be made that in recent years two such fire have erupted in Kiphire town gutting down the property completely but it was put down by the citizens and well wishers and no government agencies is seen to have given interest in the suffering of the people in the district.
