KMC reiterates ban on waste, septic tank discharge into drains

Kohima, June 4 (MExN): The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) today re-notified the general public that it has banned throwing any kinds of wastes or flushing out of septic tanks into the drainages and nullahs.

“This is also re-affirmed in the latest Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 where dumping untreated domestic hazardous or liquid sludge directly into open lands or water bodies shall be heavily penalized to protect water tables and human,” according to a notification issued by KMC Chief Executive Officer Alemyapang Longchar.  

Any individual or parties found throwing or flushing the above mention will be heavily penalized as per existing rule, the notification stated.

Prege EGF to manage disposal, segregation of waste
In another notification, KMC stated that in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 and in the interest of scientific disposal and segregation of waste, the Dziiriizou dumping site shall be looked after and managed by Prege Eco Green Foundation.

The foundation shall ensure scientific segregation, processing and disposal of waste as per the guidelines laid down under Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, according to a notification issued by KMC.

In this connection, all the 19 wards under KMC have been directed to co-ordinate with and follow the operational directives issued and no party or individual should carry back the segregated waste from the landfill site.

Any ward, individual, or establishment failing to comply with the directives or violating segregation norms shall be liable for penalties as per provision of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, the notification stated.
