Condemning the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl on June 20 in Mon, the apex Konyak women body Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) along with its 16 units held a silent protest in Mon on Saturday.

While 6 persons have been arrested by the Mon police in this connection, the union also submitted a 5-point charter of demands to the Deputy Commissioner of Mon, seeking fast-track investigation and fair delivery of justice.

The incident occurred on June 20 some 4kms from Aboi town, when two young girls were reportedly waylaid by a group of six youths. While the 15 year-old, was sexually assaulted, the other, said to be a 14 year-old, managed to escape, and inform relatives.  Arrests were made after a complaint was filed by the victim’s family the same day.

Speaking to The Morung Express over the phone, Vice President of KNSK Mon Bejem Nyemnai said that the peaceful protest garnered support and solidarity of its 16 units in the district as well as federating units in other districts and apex civil societies in Mon.

While the district administration and law enforcing agency has been extending full cooperation, the women body said that the charter demanded for fast-track investigation. It also cautioned against granting bail to the accused and cautioned against tampering of evidence.

Terming the incident as a “horrendous act,” the charter of demands stated that crimes against women should be dealt with as per the strict provision of the law. While demanding justice to be delivered at the earliest, it also asked for compensation for the victim.
