Kohima, June 26 (MExN): Access to Rights and Knowledge (ARK) Foundation, as part of the initiative towards the Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign, observed the World Drug Day 2021, on June 26 at the Kohima District Jail with the inmates and the jail authorities.
According to a press release, the programme was initiated by ARK Foundation in collaboration with the Kohima District Administration, Social Welfare and the Directorate of the Social Welfare.
Assistant Jailor Ronald graced the occasion with an opening remark mentioning about the background of the programme and why substance use and abuse is a menace to the society. He welcomed the team from ARK foundation and urged the participants to get the best benefits from the programme.
On the occasion, President of ARK Foundation Ketho Angami raised awareness about the significance of the day and also encouraged the inmates to understand the ill effects of alcoholism and substance abuse. He advised the inmates to always stay away from such ill habits as it leads to a total chaotic life in all dimensions. He went on to say that addiction in the society has posed a great threat and concern to the very survival of the individual and the society, resulting in broken families, pre-mature deaths and disharmony at homes.
He stated that the indulgence in such habits results in the formation of compulsive behaviour thus getting involved in the need to practice anti-social elements which comes in conflict with the laws as per the NDPS Act 1985.
In conclusion, he informed about the need for further collaborations in the future initiative to do away with substance abuse, and also tackle HIV and viral hepatitis.
As part of the programme, the visiting team also provided some essential items such as food items, PPEs, and personal hygiene utilities, the release stated.
