Kohima: NLA Committee of Privileges holds first sitting

Kohima, June 19 (MExN): The Committee of Privileges (2023-2024) of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) held its first sitting under the chairmanship of Moatoshi Longkumer, MLA in the committee room of Assembly Secretariat on June 5 last. The Committee of Privileges (2023-2024) includes Moatoshi Longkumer, A Pongshi Phom, Y Mankhao Konyak, Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe, TN Mannen, Sethrongkyu and Benei M Lamthiu, stated a press release received here. 

During the meeting, chairman of the Committee of Privileges, Moatoshi Longkumer drew the attention of the members to the power and functions of the Committee. He briefed the members that the House of Legislatures and its committees collectively and the members individually enjoy certain rights, privileges and immunities as enshrined in Article 194 of the Constitution of India. “These privileges are being granted with the intention that members discharge their functions without any let or hindrance and that all the members should be aware of their privileges,” he stated.

Longkumer also explained how important this Committee is for the Legislatures with its underlining object being to safeguard the freedom, the authority and the dignity of House and its members. 

He enlightened the members on the question of privileges such as breach of privilege and contempt of House. 

In his closing remark, the chairman, urged the members to give their full cooperation and to actively participate in the activities of the committee as the House has bestowed upon them the trust to carry out the function of the committee.
