A three-day Sekrenyi Mini-Hornbill Festival will start from February 25 to 27 at Khuochiezie, Kohima Local Ground under the theme "Restoring Values."

Sekrenyi, also known as ‘Phousanyi' is the premier festival of the Angami Nagas. It is a festival of ‘purification and sanctification' of the body, mind and soul. Rituals are performed to cleanse off the past wrongs and sins; to renew and purify the body and soul of oneself, kinsmen, village and the community as a whole, ushering in greater aspiration and purpose in life.

The festival also marks the initiation of the young into adulthood; and therefore, the festival is considered to be the hallmark of the Angamis.

The 2020 Sekrenyi Mini Hornbill, jointly organized by Angami Public Organisation (APO) and the Government of Nagaland is to revisit the great virtues and values that were a part of our culture in the past, and restoring those that will give our identity today worth and depth.

Addressing a press conference here today, Kohima Additional Deputy Commissioner, Lithrongla Thongi Rutsa said the festival to be celebrated for three days will not only bring together the culture, tradition and ethnic food of the Angami tribe from the four regions–Northern, Southern, Western and Chakhro, but also aims at passing on the culture and tradition of the forefathers to the younger generation.

The celebration will mainly focus on showcasing the Angami traditional items in various segments keeping in line with the objective of the Government to promote local entrepreneurs among the community, she said.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will be the chief host while Sumi Hoho President, Hekhushe Shikhu will be the honoured guest of the festival.

Tenyimi tribes of Nagaland (Chakhesang, Pochury, Rengma and Zeliang) will grace the festival as special guest.

The inaugural function on February 25 will start from 11:00 am onwards. Kohima Deputy Commissioner, Gregory Thejawelie Sote will deliver welcome address while Angami Public Organization (APO) President Dr Kepelhusie Terhiija will highlight the significance of Sekrenyi.

Nagaland’s Youth Resources and Sports Advisor, Er Zale Neikha will also share greetings. Vote of thanks will be proposed by Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) Administrator, Kovi Meyase.

Beside the festivities, the four ranges will be opening up stalls to sell the different products of Angami tribe and also the ethnic food and local fruits and beverages.

On the second day, the stalls will open at 12:00 noon while the cultural extravaganza will commence at 5:00 pm which will be marked by traditional song (Angami) competition, Act: “Themia puo kelhou” and Traditional & Ethnic Designer show.
