Konyaks to check child-help trade

Dimapur, April 9 (MExN): Taking strong note of what it stated is the “influx” of Konyak children employed as domestic helpers in Kohima, the Konyak civil society has asked all guardians or families in the capital, to report to Konyak Baptist Church, near Mezhur Higher Secondary School, Kohima for identification of the children on April 21, 2007 at 10am. This is to facilitate ‘better understanding and coordination in the society’ a note from the KSU, KNSK and KU (Kohima) executives stated. Those who fail to comply with this notice would be doing so at own risk, it also cautioned. The KSU stated that it is not against keeping Konyak children if they are ‘brought’ directly from their parents for the purpose of studies, trainings or as helpers with nominal charge but the involvement of middlemen who broker bringing in children from Mon in Kohima by “reaping off benefits from the children, their biological parents and the family to which the children are entrusted with.” After several brokers were caught, the KSU has been compelled to monitor such dealings and more than 10 children have been sent back to Mon in the last few months, it stated. The union was of the view that the sensitive situation in society highlighted by crimes was a concern entailing the action of the union. This matter has also been taken up with Konyak civil society, it added.
