Amid the likelihood of a breach of public peace and tranquillity, the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Mokokchung District, Ajit Kumar Verma IAS has imposed a night curfew in the jurisdiction of Longkhum Village, Mangmetong Village and Alichen area (including the 2nd NAP Camp) under the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency of Mokokchung district.
The curfew will remain in force from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM with immediate effect until further orders.
The order has been issued in view of the ensuing Bye-Election to the 28-Koridang AC, where the Model Code of Conduct is already operational across Mokokchung district. “…maintenance of public peace and order is prerequisite to conduct the scheduled Bye-Election in free, fair and peaceful manner,” the District Magistrate stated in an order issued on April 6.
The order confirmed that reports received from Sector Magistrates and the Senior Superintendent of Police (Sr SP), Mokokchung, indicated a likelihood of disruption to public order that could “endanger human life and property in the region.”
Based on the report received from Sector Magistrates and Sr SP, Mokokchung and on careful examination of prevailing law and order situation, the District Magistrate has imposed the night curfew.
Exercising powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS-2023), the District Magistrate noted that he is satisfied that immediate preventive measures are necessary to prevent any breach to public peace and tranquillity and ensure maintenance of public order within the jurisdiction of Longkhum Village, Mangmetong Village and Alichen area (including 2nd NAP Camp).
Key restrictions:
• Assembly of five or more persons shall remain strictly prohibited
• Restrictions within the jurisdiction of Longkhum Village, Mangmetong Village and Alichen area including 2nd NAP Camp
Exempted categories:
• Police, Armed Forces, and security personnel on duty
• Magistrates and government officials on official or election duty
• Medical personnel, ambulance, and emergency services
• Individuals engaged in emergency or essential services
The District Magistrate warned that any violation of the order would lead to prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and other relevant legal provisions.
“The order shall come into force with immediate effect till further orders. Considering urgency of the matter, this order has been passed exparte,” the District Magistrate added.
